"We did everything right." You can be the judge of that. Here's the story: After my heat was out for five days in early January, Columbia Heating came and fixed the pilot light. Three days later, an estimator from Rose City Heating came to give my landlord a quote. When he left, the pilot light (which had been recently fixed) was no longer working.

I had no luck fixing it myself. A Rose City Heating repair person (named Paul) came that night and didn't look at the pilot light. He came to give me a space heater. I was then without heat for another several days of winter, and I was told to block out 8-11am plus 4-6 hours for installation of a new unit. That was rescheduled, I believe it was the same day, to closer to noon.

When they arrived, I asked: can you first check to see if you can fix the pilot light? Repairperson Paul (who was doing the installation) said "that's not what the landlord authorized." Even though, when I spoke to the Landlord the next day, he said "did they even try to fix the pilot light, first?" No they didn't.not during the night Paul came over, nor the day he came back for install. **On installation day, it took barely 2-3 hours to 'complete' the installation job.

That should've been the first hint of something being wrong. Pictures attached -bottom door of the unit wasn't able to close because Repairperson Paul said we would need to cut the floor (not true) -shows the cover on top of the unit, which was about to fall off The pilot light was making noises several times an hour (7-9 click click click click click click 'light') and I asked Repairperson Paul about this.

He said it was going to happen now since I don't have a constant pilot light any more. I asked if he could make it happen less, and he said no. Over the course of the next five days, the heater made hundreds of loud noises at all hours. EVERY 18 minutes, the following noises ensued: (Sample Timeframe) 10:33 pilot light clicks on (this is a series of 7-8 clicks before it lights) 10:37 "wahh" noise 10:39 'whirring' noise 20 seconds 10:41 'whirring' noise for 15 seconds 10:43 'whirring' noise for20 seconds 10:43 - 10:46 "clanking and whirring noise' 10:52 pilot light clicks on (7-8 series of clicks) Whole cycle repeats 11:10 Pilot light clicks on (7-8 clicks) Whole cycle repeats And on and on.

This is hundreds of noises per day, emanating from the middle of my apartment, there is no escaping. The unit looks very similar to the previous unit, which only made noise while heating the air. It did not make any other noises. These noises were extraordinarily disruptive from a brand new unit. Rose City Heating then wisely sent Repair & Installation person Pat over and he spent 3.5 hours fixing the job that his colleague had done on the install (Note: The electric is still very messy, they said that would take a month to fix) Pat even adjusted the thermostat so that the pilot light only clicks on less than a dozen times per day, instead of 3-5x an hour (96+ times per day) HOWEVER, as soon as Pat left, the heating unit no longer worked and I was without heat another 1/2 day and night. Turns out, Pat had accidentally flicked the switch to "off" when re-caulking the left side of the unit.

He fixed it and said "wasn't this great customer service?" True, he and Paul are super nice guys. But the best customer service would be to not have lost heat again after hours and hours (and days) were spent on this unit by your team. My landlord and I have had to cancel countless commitments to be available for huge time windows and noise in my home.

The reason he opted for the new unit was to avoid the headache that dealing with the old unit may have caused. Due to the installation procedures, significantly more headaches and hours of time investment have been incurred by us both. ***No discount was given, in fact, the 'accidentally' added a cost they hadn't mentioned during the original quote. I do not recommend Rose City Heating.

We were in need of new air conditioning units and an air handler at the start of the summer, during supply shortages, so our expectations weren't exactly high, and we weren't in a hurry anyway (they were still working, just not at their peak anymore). They weren't able to get one of the air conditioner units due to the supply shortages, but installed the other two right away and took less time than they had planned.

While we were waiting, the unit waiting to be replaced broke, and they came out to fix it for free. They were apologetic for it taking so long to get the second AC unit, which was unnecessary as it was not at all their fault. Everything with them went as well as it possibly could have, and I'd recommend them to anyone.

This has been a frustration and I chose this company based on a recommendation. I don't do reviews usually but warning to the uninitiated 1. Installed heating and air, first time they didn't correctly install the thermostat and the heater wouldn't turn off, came to a 95F house (that had been newly painted) and $60 gas bill for 24 HOURS 2. Got someone to come in to fix (called before they officially close but never called back that day, that happened each time.).

This is the second day I had to take off work as an essential employee. Same guy set up thermostat and didn't work. Some of the hottest days in Portland and my thermostat said 71 but when I bought a thermometer said 90 and had to show that before they would believe me. Called and asked anyone but Steve come and finally fixed (another day away from the hospital). Had not been set up correctly 3. Needed an inspection asked to do a specific date and definitely AFTER the day I was on call all night before and therefore had to manage patients from the call, rescheduled my clinic patients to fit that date. 5 days early (AND post call) called by inspector and told showing up. Also, women out there, when you call to get help they are paternalistic and patronizing which I realize is pretty par for the course with contractors but a little frustrating when they are also being inept.

This company is incredibly well run. It is totally professional and transparent. I give them my whole-hearted five star endorsement. I even let the owner, Jeff Pangborn, upsell me into an upgrade with the new furnace. He promised I would be more comfortable, and I am. I am betting that Jeff has an mba given how well he runs the business. Kudos to Jeff, his installation team and to Chris (sp?) in the office. Well done everyone. Be well and stay safe.

We just had AC added to our home. It could not have gone more smoothly. Jeff Pangborn came out and quoted the job, and was very thorough and professional. The quote, which was reasonable, was essentially the same as another company, but we went with Rose City based on a recommendation from friends. We're very glad we did. The installation team was excellent.

They were on time, communicated well, and they worked independently all day, so we could continue working our remote jobs, undisturbed. And best of all, there were no surprises! A couple of the other companies from whom we received higher quotes, definitely seemed to "pad" their quotes - one citing potential installation issues, and the other itemized things such as the electrical installation and thermostat, which were much higher.

The Rose City quote was all-inclusive, and Jeff didn't try to upsell us on anything. And since he's the owner, we trusted that it was accurate and there would be no hidden costs, which there were not. It was all very simple and straightforward. Now we have AC for the first time ever, and it's working great! The new thermostat, which is connected to our phones, can be adjusted remotely at any time, which is really convenient.

We're also pleasantly surprised by the low noise level of the American Standard compressor. We couldn't be more happy with our new AC and with Rose City Heating & Air. Highly recommend!

Rose City Heating & Air just finished installing a new gas furnace and AC unit for us and we are so happy. The entire process was made easy and handled very professionally. Jeff came out and gave us the estimate and was very helpful and knowledgeable. Sterling was the installation technician and he did a fantastic job. He cleaned up after installation, wore shoe covers and a face mask due to COVID. Thank you so much you guys you run a top notch business.

Rose City saved our hides! We were incorrectly told by another company that we had a catastrophic furnace failure that required complete replacement. We initially worked with Jeff who came out to give us a bid on a new furnace. He alerted us to several significant complicating (and potentially very expensive) issues that none of the other companies had mentioned.

He offered to serve as a sounding board for questions as we sorted out our plans. Eventually, we decided to pay Rose City to do a service visit to confirm the initial diagnosis. Jeff sent one of his most experienced guys, Pat, who has decades of knowledge, to take a look. He was great! He methodically started at square one and looked over our furnace.

We had been warned that our problem could be dangerous and he took safety steps that made us feel very comfortable as he worked. He ultimately determined that it was a faulty electronic control board and NOT a catastrophic heat exchanger failure as we had been previously told. He wasn't 100% positive, but felt like we should replace that first and see if that solved our issues.

It did! After 2 weeks without heat, Pat had us up and running in 1.5 hours and for less than $500! Please note that we had been given replacement bids up to $11,000! We were THIS close to reluctantly replacing our furnace. After the furnace was functioning, he turned it off and on 4 separate times just to make sure that everything was working and continued to make safety measurements (for CO). We are SO glad we called Rose City and really appreciate the time and effort Jeff and Pat put in to help us out! Thanks again guys!

Our experience with Rose City was a hassle from beginning to end. The person who installed our new heat pump barely spoke to us while he was here. He did not explain anything about the new thermostat or tell us where he put the warranty, manuals and other paperwork. Then my neighbor told me she bought a heat pump. The technician from the installing company spent an hour explaining how her new thermostat worked, submitted the paperwork for an Energy Trust credit for her, and then subtracted the Trust credit amount from her total bill so she wouldn't need to do anything in order to get her credit.

I called Rose City Heating & Air about this, including a missing warranty and invoice. I had to have them send the invoice three times. The first time the invoice said it was a proposal. The second time was to get the correct thermostat included in the invoice, and the third time I realized someone else's name and address was on the invoice. I asked them about an EnergyTrust credit.

They said I wasn't eligible; however, I persisted with the EnergyTrust people and received a $250 credit for the new thermostat. Next, Rose City called me, telling me the technician failed to put an "electrical minor label" on our fuse box. They said someone would bring the label to our mailbox. I responded and a week went by with no word from them--I had to contact them again in order to receive the label. The total amount of phone calls and emails with Rose City and the EnergyTrust is at least 20. I do not recommend this company.

Rose City came out to diagnose by broken AC, I was charged $99 and given a report that said my compressor and contactor were broken and needed replacing, for $2250. Since this is 3/4 of the cost of a new unit, I ask to have an estimator out to quote a price for replacing the unit. The estimator comes out a day or so later and also suggests I need to replace the furnace and that I should consider a downstairs AC unit as well to help with resale value of my home.

This conversation went way beyond what I was expecting so I call another company for a second opinion and have The Heating Specialist out and they find the compressor to be working fine and the inside controller was the problem, an easy and inexpensive fix. Replacing the contactor and control panel was less than $600 and it took less than one hour to have my unit up and running with no problems, a far cry from the quote of $2250 from Rose City!

I then call Rose City to let them know that the compressor was not broken as I was told and the manager simply said they stand by their techs, period. He talked in circles as to why and how the misdiagnosis was possible. He said they would reimburse me the initial diagnostic fee of $99.00 which was good of them but I do feel like they were trying to sell me a new system or two vs. being honest about a simple repair. Beware!

Gas Furnace stopped on night of ice and snow, miserable cold. Pat arrived by 1pm as promised, ran for a part, fixed my 20 yr old furnace without any fuss or mess, for reasonable price! I was treated courteously and honestly. Very satisfied. I called another place, Beaverton Heating and Cooling the same time, and the FIRST thing they said on phone was "after 20 years have you considered you probably need a new furnace?

I can't believe that brand lasted this long." Talked down to me, while clearly expecting to sell me a new furnace. Arrogant insensitive guy I will not call again. My money will follow excellent customer service and respectful treatment by Rose City Heating and Air! Thanks!

I was SO impressed with their service... and I only wish I'd known about them several years ago. Friendly people on the phone and in the field. We had an intermittent problem develop with our Carrier furnace, and few companies were available for a prompt visit (on a cold stretch of days). Technician Pat came out and spent a mere hour to quickly diagnose the problem and fix it. Turned out to be an easy unclogging of the condensate system... and that would have been included in a regular service call. SO, the cost was a regular (overdue in our case) service call.

A steal if you ask me.

Pat was so friendly and fun to chat with, and I learned a fair bit myself about our system. He called ahead (during the schedule window of time) and was prompt. I'll definitely use them again!

I was in need of a new furnace after it was revealed during a routine inspection that it was no longer safe to use. Rose City Heating came recommended from a contractor friend of mine. I had challenges with my schedule to get the estimator out to my home, but from the outset they were willing to work with my schedule to get a rep out to my home the next day. Roy was attentive, quick and friendly and provided me with several options within a few hours of coming to my home.

The price was fair and they were able to install the following day which convinced me to go ahead. The technicians, Chris, Pat and "Sparky" arrived early, were friendly and got to work with the install. They found some challenges with the configuration of my building but were able to troubleshoot a workable solution. After the install, Pat took the time to explain the differences between the old furnace and the new one.

They cleaned up after the job site and I was relieved to have heat again as we had relatively cold evenings. This was the easiest, painless contractor/install experience I have had.

Just got done working with Pat, really great guy, stayed to help me out even though he took the call as a favor and was supposed to be heading back to Vancouver before traffic. Really appreciate that. He got my heat pump working and helped me with my condenser on my downstairs unit, really appreciate the service. I called three other places and was not able to get an appointment for at least 6 days. Rose City said they might be able to make it out in 2 but I got lucky thanks to Pat made it out same day got everything taken care of.

5.0 star rating 1/31/2017 Our heating system went out on Sunday. We called another company that told my husband, who was able to troubleshoot the problem, that we probably needed a whole new unit. I thought that was a stretch when they hadn't even seen the unit! The following morning I called a couple of places that had decent reviews but couldn't get out to us until Wednesday.

We didn't want to be cold for two more days so I called Rose Heating. The woman who answered the phone was polite and said they could come out the same day. She took the part number off the part my husband suspected needed replacing. Not only was the repairman on time but he brought out the correct part, replaced it, cleaned the filter, checked everything else out and had it up and running in less than an hour.

Total cost was $248, included part ($144) and labor ($104)! The other "reputable" company quoted my husband $5,000 for a new unit. I think we made the right choice! I wouldn't hesitate recommending this company for a second!

I called Rose City Heating & Air to do a tune-up/maintenance check on a gas furnace since I had just moved in. Safe (the service tech) came out and was professional & efficient with his time. He caught a problem with the duct system that could have become a major issue. Great experience, much appreciated.

Air conditioning only fails on the hottest of days, and mine went out during an ungodly hot (for Portland, at least) streak this year. I'm not a fan of the heat, and I had a party coming up in a few days. I was worried about cost, worried my guests would melt, and entirely sweating my ass off. Rose City was amazing. They were as fast or faster than anyone with getting out to the house, and when their tech (Dave) arrived - he was the man.

I got a professional repair for a very fair price. I also learned some things talking with Dave. And when I had a follow up need a few days later, the great service continued. This is the second time Rose City has done a great job for me (once for heating and now for a/c). I will continue to be their customer and I want others to know just how fantastic they are!

I called for a gas wall furnace repair due to the gas company saying the gas valve had failed. The repair man showed up and looked at the gas valve and said he did not think he would be able to get a replacement valve.but he would check. two days later he called to say the manufacturer (Williams) said the valve was obsolete. He said he would send out our bill for $89. and advised we contact his office for an estimate for a new furnace.

I called another company and the repairman came out and replaced the valve in 4 hours (expensive at $610).but less then the $2,000. to replace the furnace. Rose city made No effort made to fix the furnace.just sell us a new one.

Exceptional service and quality! I received multiple bids and Rose City beat all the other prices, but what impressed me the most was their customer service and knowledge of the products. When they came out to install they decided we needed a larger heater and they upgraded it for free. I was impressed with the sales person, installers, and office employees. Highly recommend Rose City!

I am a Realtor who used Rose City for a Heating and Air Conditioning for an Inspection connected with the purchase of a home. Technician Dave located a potentially dangerous situation where the Hot Water Heater and Heater vents connected. Dave said there could be Carbon Monoxide getting into the garage and ultimately in the house. Great Find. This will be repaired prior to my Buyer moving in.

The man that came out and did an estimate for our air conditioner replacement seemed to know what he was doing. However, he said he would send us an email with the estimate and never did, so we went with another company. First impressions, people. Oh, and if you want the flashlight you left at our house back, you're still welcome to send that follow-up email.

We called Rose City Heating when I moved into my new house and found out that the furnace didn't work. They came out after a week and then gave us a quote for $950.00 worth of repairs that they said needed to be made. One of the things on the list was a new motor for the furnace and it was quoted at $450. We decided to do some investigation and ended up purchasing the same exact brand and type of motor, brand new from a local store for $150.

I understand that companies mark things up for the ease of not having to get the parts yourself, but this seemed extreme. We called another company and they sent someone out. $140 later our problems were solved and the furnace was working beautifully. By calling someone else we were able to save $660.00. I would get a second opinion if you call them and they give you an outrageously expensive quote for a repair.

I will say that they were VERY friendly and took time to explain the quote to me, we even called them later to ask some questions and they were great about taking the time to answer them but I personally won't be calling them again.
Megan Morlock
This is the most honest company and their technicians are incredibly well-qualified. When other companies misdiagnosed our problem, Rose City technicians quickly set us on the proper repair path--at a fraction of the cost of other companies' quotes. Hands-down the best HVAC company we've worked with in Portland and we will continue using them for years to come.

These guys are awesome! They installed a couple of amazing mini-split units in our house and have come out immediately when I experienced some unusual issues more than a year later. I highly recommend them.
