Our company started when Bob Hardina bought out a well-established Damariscotta plumbing and heating company and renamed it Mid-Coast Energy Systems Inc. During the 1976 embargo, Bob realized the need to make alternative energy viable for all. In fact, the MCES logo with its bright sun shining over a rooftop represents Bob's vision to one day make alternative energy available to everyone.

He has devoted his life's work to educating and promoting energy efficiency and conservation. In 2000, Bob sold the company to employees William Morgner, Ron Russell, and David Gamage.

Heating can be the largest expense in most homes, accounting for as much as 50% of annual energy bills- but it doesn't have to be. Our design team will draft personalized recommendations based on your lifestyle, home design, and the latest technology available today. Well there are several reasons why you may or may not want to go with propane over oil.
Our HVAC system design / build services help to bring cost and time efficiency to your project and ensures that it fits right, installs right and works as it should. Our in-house design team brings decades of experience to the table for you. Whether you're looking to integrate geothermal, traditional fuel or a mix of heating and cooling technologies, we have the experience and know how to handle the project from start to finish.
Heat pumps are a valuable tool to heat and cool your home. With nearly 500+ installations, we have the experience and know how. We look at the heat pump installation as part of a "system" in your home, not just a stand-alone unit. Well it's difficult to pinpoint exactly how much a heat pump is going to cost in electricity to operate.
We install and service warm air furnaces in new construction. Or we can replace the one you have. We place more emphasis on operating efficiency. We provide duct volume and CFM calculations to ensure that your new furnace will be adequately sized and have a long life. If your furnace is not sized properly for your home, it will not work well.

This team from Mid-Coast Energy systems of Damariscotta, Maine installed my state-of-the-art heat pump in one afternoon. They were absolutely top notch from the initial survey of the property to the very professional team who performed the complex installation like a team of surgeons. From tapping into my main electrical panel to installing the inside unit and the well hidden compressor under the deck, they did an excellent job.

This well versed trio worked in tandem so well, you just knew they had done it a thousand times. The company did exactly what they said they were going to do and for the exact price. Even guided me to big state and federal refunds. Seems to be a rare find theses days. Great job.

I had Mid-Coast out to speak with me about my water heater that was giving off an sulfur smell due to corrosion of the Magnesium anodes. I was told to simply have the anodes changed to aluminum. This was a positive initial consult. The work was scheduled and 2 techs came out to do a 1 person job that took 10 minutes. They charged me 1.5 hours x 2 techs at $100/hour.

They replaced one of the anodes with aluminum and the other with a magnesium anode, exactly what they told me that I should not have in the tank if it was going to sit for any amount of time. I called to inquire about the bill, (excessive technician time), as well as the fact that they did not replace the 2 anodes with aluminum, (as suggested). The manager who helped me was nice enough, and told me he'd look into it.

He called me back and left me a message and told me to give him a shout back, which I did, several times, (with no return call). When I finally got to him after 5 tries, (VM left each time), he told me the company was standing it's ground on the bill. I do not recommend Mid-Coast. Buyer beware.they grossly overcharge and were not flexible when I told them they installed the wrong anode.

Had a leak in our water meter in the basement and the old shutoff valve would not work. Called and scheduled a service. The technician (James) arrived on time, diagnosed the problem and handled calling the water company to shut off the water. He replaced the old valves, installed a new water meter and added a bypass for a water filter that I requested. James was polite, efficient and left the area as clean as it was when he arrived. He did a beautiful job on the repair. Highly recommended!

We've been happy with their boiler cleaning service but last time we use them to replace certain parts for our boiler, the technician came unprepared and they charge us for the amount of time they did nothing with our boiler. Called the company to give them our feedback but the respond we got from the manager very unprofessional. Poor customer service.

We recently had a Mitsubishi mini-split heat pump system installed in our home by Mid-Coast Energy Systems. The installation team (Nick, Dylan, Justin, & Mick) accomplished the task in a timely and highly professional manner. There was no wasted time on site by this crew. They were punctual, courteous, and strictly observed the requirements to wear face masks & maintain physical distance during the current Covid-19 issue. Nick was very helpful in answering questions about the system and explaining how to use it.

We are very satisfied with the installation process and look forward to using our new heating & cooling system. Mid-Coast Energy was recommended by a friend and we would be happy to recommend them to anyone considering them.

Came home to a flooded basement, found the source and our first call was to Midcoast. It's 9pm so there's a fee of $150/hr, obviously fine, just help us! The technician shows up, nice kid. He snakes the drain that's flooding everything, but the snake isn't long enough. That's the only tool he has apparently. He and my husband search for the outlet outside and spitball ideas back and forth for an hour and a half.

No solution is proposed, no offer to maybe come back the next day, nothing, but we pay the guy. Our basement is still flooded mind you. So I, instead of posting a review, message the company to explain the situation and my frustration, hoping they will make it right in some way or at least help with a solution from someone with more experience maybe.

The lady apologizes and says a manager will be in touch. Well first thing this morning my husband gets a phone call from the service technician himself basically saying your wife wrote my boss about me and he starts defending himself up and down. No manager reached out, no credit was given back, just the employee himself defending his actions. Seriously unprofessional from a company to have the employee, who did nothing wrong other than lack experience and knowledge, call the customer and harass them.

Now we have another company on the way who also charges the same $150/hour fee we paid this kid. Seriously disappointed in the way this was handled on their end. But would not recommend.

We hired MCE to do the plumbing and electrical work on a bathroom that was completely gutted. Gina came over, as scheduled, and looked at the work required. We agreed to time and materials. Electricians came first, and did all the rough in wiring. They were prompt and courteous. The next day plumbers came and did the rough-in over 2 days. This included a new baseboard radiator on our hydronic system as well as a new controller for the added zone. Again, they were prompt and courteous.

I'm an engineer, and inspect everything. The technicians do a wonderful job. Although not inexpensive, I recommend wholeheartedly. I'll post another review when our project is complete.
